  • Playing with Knives is a very inspirational book. I read it at a time when I was making some major changes in my life. Bob’s courage and drive to start new things provided me with a road map for my own experiences. It is true that learning new things and having new experiences keeps us young and enjoying life. Bob is a wonderful graphic writer and is able to portray his adventures with humour and sensitivity. It was easy for me to both imagine the people I met in the book and their adventures. [...]

  • I loved this book!Bob Foulkes is a wonderful storyteller. He is incredibly funny and so authentic. There were moments when I almost felt like I was at cooking school with him. What I really appreciated about the book (besides a shared love of France and the way they see food and meals) was the invitation that seemed to spring from the book.e invitation to think about my life and what adventures I would like to have. It was inspiring and I find myself planningybe not cooking school (sounds pretty [...]

  • "It made me laugh, it made me cry." Seriously this is a sweet little gem of a book. This is a later-in-life adventure story - in culinary school. I was hooked by the introduction and knew it was going to be a sweet read. Loved his story about that classic - rhubarb! Chapter 20 made me cry - read it and you'll know why. Highly recommended. I would give it a 5, but the only problem is it was too short - finished this too soon, wanted to savour it a little longer like one of his confections. A must [...]

  • Adventure is the perfect descriptor, the unknown, the challenge that's just a bit beyond what Bob thinks he can do and of course the humour in all that occurs is what kept me reading. The people he meets and what's learned together makes his life rich like a stew. Bob describes what's common in us all as he goes through his ups and downs so we wind up sharing his experience on many levels. By the end of the book I felt as if we'd met for coffee several times throughout his course, and wondered w [...]

  • I had a wonderful time with this book. It is full of warm wit and the ups and downs of life in the culinary world. A good read for anyone who loves the behind the scenes in a restaurant style of non-fiction. I work in a professional kitchen and recommend this to all the young kids I know headed off to cooking school -- it will definitely give them a taste of what they are in for, and hopefully also let them know that they will never hit a point in life where they will stop learning!

  • Bob Foulkes writes intimately and engagingly about food, cooking and the business of feeding people. I laughed out loud and learned a lot while I followed his roller coaster progress at a Vancouver culinary school. I was pulling for him all the way. "Adventures with Knives" should be required reading for anyone thinking of taking up cooking as a career. Kudos, Bob - and please write another book about whatever you do next.Pat Walker in New Westminster BC Canada

  • What a great read! An inspiring book with a touch of self-depreciating humour that Bob Foulkes delivers on marvellously. A must-read for foodies, Food Network lovers, and people considering culinary school, this book gives a great inside look at the trials and tribulations that one goes through in culinary school, at 60 nonetheless! It is so well written and had me chuckling from the beginning. Touching and heartwarming. Congratulations Bob!

  • What happens when a semi-retired professional guy decides to indulge himself and go to culinary school? Adventures with Knives happens! Bob's wry and self-deprecating humour shines through in his account of his six months filled with learning all the intricacies of French cooking. However, this isn't just about culinary school, it's also about letting yourself go to step out of your comfort zone to explore something new and exciting.

  • Every time I picked up this book it made me hungry. And it also made me laugh and it made me think - there's not much more you can ask from a book.Bob Foulkes takes us to cooking school, but also takes us into his life, and makes the point that age is no barrier to excitement, growth, and learning. This is a skillfully written book and adult inspirational, no matter your age.

  • Great read. The introduction through the first 4.5 months were my favorite parts. The end chapters do not have as much autobiographical detail on kitchen life, but Bob offers reflections on his journey and life that are equally well written and enjoyable.

  • Bob Foulkes has a way of storytelling that is filled with humility and humour. He weaves the type on the page in such as way as to remind us all of our universal human condition. A great read, good gift for an semi-retired man, or his partner!

  • This book is both a fun read for anyone interested in a behind the scenes look at culinary school life and an inspirational tale story about taking on risks and new challenges at any stage in life.
